In April 2008, the Lone Fir at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, WA was vandalized by a troubled individual who attempted to cut it down with an axe. Superintendent David Wienecke called Neal Wolbert to see if the tree could be saved. The slides below show the steps taken to repair the damage, and the preservation treatments done to help the tree recover. The repair undertaken was unique and successfull, as you will see. The condition of the tree has improved considerably, the result of several treatments that were done to improve the growing conditions. The tree's dramatic responses have been quite rewarding. The preservation treeaments included airspading to remove excess soil from the root crown and over the root system, the removal of construction-damaged roots, the addition of compost and limb chip mulch, with myhcorrhizae beneficial fungus, and periodic summer irrigation.
